Adenta Children's Home
After extensive planning, the Safe Haven children's home in Adenta, a suburb of Accra, was inaugurated in April 2011! It offered 15 children aged 2 to 12 years a new home.
These children came from a wide variety of backgrounds and faced different challenges accordingly. Almost all were severely neglected, many had health problems and some had experienced abuse.
In the meantime, Safe Haven has become a tax-deductible, state-recognised aid organisation in Switzerland and remains dedicated to supporting and educating children in poverty.
Today
The children's home is run by a professional home manager couple. They are supported by a hired cook who takes care of all the catering. The children help with the household chores and thus learn to take responsibility as well.
Safe Haven is also recognised by the state in Ghana and works together with the authorities. For example, in the admission of new children, or the participation of staff in regular training courses on education and hygiene.
Our children
A lot has changed since the opening: The little children have grown into teenagers and young adults! Some are looking for apprenticeships, others are transferring to secondary school. The primary school NIC International School was only a five-minute walk from the children's home and the change of school means such a long way for the young people that they have to live on site during the week.
In addition to covering the running costs of the children's home (staff wages, food, clothing, school and medical costs for the children, etc.), we also take care of repairs and maintenance of the house and inventory.
As it is our great wish to be able to offer a home to even more street children, we would like to make good use of the space on our property and build a second building behind the already existing one. On the one hand, this new building will provide space for new children, on the other hand, the home administration urgently needs space for a professional office.
NIC International School Adenta
The school was opened in 2015 and aims to provide quality education to the people of the region. In the first phase of the school construction, we set up the offices and classrooms for the pre-primary and primary school. Later, the classrooms for the secondary school were added.
As required by the government in Ghana, our students also wear school uniforms. The school places great emphasis on competent teaching staff. We welcome volunteers from abroad so that you can share your knowledge with our staff.
Education is sustainable and helps people to have a better future.
Update school
The Corona pandemic also hit our school hard. We also had to re-encourage our students to return to class after the pandemic. To do this, we gave scholarships and other material support to those who needed it most.
Outlook
We are currently in the second phase of our school construction project. The building will have two more floors. The final three floors will provide space for various offices, more classrooms, a gymnasium and a library.
Mercy Center
In our school building project we want to house a Mercy Centre and a drop-in centre and shelter for women with unwanted pregnancies. This sub-project is truly a matter of the heart. Through the Mercy Centre, we are providing practical help on the ground in everyday life:
We provide much-needed basic food for the needy, cover the cost of medicines, hospital visits and stays, provide clothing and shelter for homeless families and help pay their children's school fees. Furthermore, we support people in setting up businesses with start-up capital.
